Can a dishwasher be installed away from the kitchen sink?

We have bought a dishwasher and are installing it in an old kitchen. Only problem is it is not near the sink and unless we remodel, it never will be. We do however, have the option to run the hot water straight up from the basement (water heater is located almost directly below the dishwasher placement) and run a drain line downstairs into an outgoing pipe or the floor drain that we have. Is this an option we can use? Otherwise, I have a $400 counter prop! Please help!

  1. Go for it. The only reason a dishwasher is installed next to sinks is that it's convenient to load from the sink area and cheaper to run supply and drain lines from the sink. Be sure the dishwasher drain line forms a loop high under the counter or the water will siphon out before you can finish the cycle.
  2. I agree, go for it!
  3. Yes, sounds like you have everything you need.
  4. it has to have a water line and a drain and power as long as it has that you could put it anywhere
  5. You might also have to run cold water as well. Some dishwashers require both. Drainage can be a problem as you must keep it to building code.Every home must be conected to municipal water or approved septic systems in rural areas .Most important is to know where these drains go or end up and meet your local government code. Good luck
  6. Two reasons to put the dishwasher next to the sink: 1) Convenience for loading and utilities, 2) Some building codes require an air gap in the dishwasher drain. It is handy to put the air gap on the sink in case the drain plugs after the air gap and the air gap overflows (the water will just go down the sink). Dishwashers pump water down the drain under pressure (like washing machines) so if you do hook it up directly to your drain, you will want to make sure if your sewer system ever gets plugged your dishwasher drain will not pressurize your sewer system and cause sewage to come back out of other places in your home (water from your dishwasher spilling out is not nearly as bad as other stuff in your sewer system).
