Does a dishwasher clean dishes or sanitizes them?
As for some people, they think a dishwasher cleans dishes, riding all the specks of food and all. and some think it just sanitizes them after you scrubbed the food off of them. What do u think? One or the other, or maybe even both?? just curious.

- Mine does both. I have a garbage disposal in it. I do not have to wash the dishes first, that's kind of the whole point. I can put a nasty dish with food all over or in it. I also have the option to have them sanitized by the heating element that is in the bottom of it. But have to be careful of plastic dishes. They MELT. Hope this helps!!!!
- If you run it through the steam cycle it does sanitize as well as clean, or at least mine does.
- manufacturers try to do both or will tell you they are doing both. Most people save the dishes until they have a full load and the food drys on them making it tough to get off. It is best to either pre wash them or wash the partial loads. Either method is an energy hog.
- Most dishwashers do either one. You can set it to sanitize but as the manual states, once you touch them they are no longer sanitized, you have contaminated them. Therefore there's not point in using this setting. Just wash them.
- I have a very old dishwaher it was one of the first ones made and i never have to wash anything before i put the dishes in it and it cleans them wonderful , and it also sanitizes them that is why the dishwasher gets so hott
- Both. The heat kills the germs plus I think that detergents contain enough bleach to kill the germs as well.
- A dishwasher washes AND sanitizes them. Hotter water than your hands can stand and detergent that is mostly bleach. Scrubbing food off the dishes defeats the purpose.
