Dishwasher backing up?

Here's the problem. My dishwasher will be full of foul smelling water. I can get the dishwasher to drain by simply running it through a rinse cycle, although the stench takes a while to air out. I went to load the dishwasher today and the bottom was once again full of murky, foul smelling water. I can't figure out where it is coming from or even where to start addressing this issue. Help? Okay, I've run a dishwasher cleaner through and I've pulled the unit out to get a better look at it. It may have been improperly installed all those years ago. What I BELIEVE is the drain line (black tubing coming out the back/bottom) has a small loop in it and sits on the floor. There isn't enough tubing to raise it up even if I wanted to. I'm wondering if this is the source of the problem and, if so, why this problem has just recently started. Since this is a new problem I'm looking for other possible explanations as well.

  1. Time to call a Dishwasher Repair Guy!
  2. Eek! Do you rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher??? This may be your problem, DW's cant handle bits of food clogging them up, you have to rinse and also use a dishwasher cleaner once a month! You put the cleaner in without dishes on a long cycle. Thats why it must smell really bad!
  3. is you dishwasher draining into your garbage disposal? usually there is a knockout on the disposal for just such a connection. if so then the water from the disposal could be backing up into your dishwasher. open the dishwasher and drain a full sink of water from the disposal side and look for the water to backup. there should be a large loop in the dishwasher drain line to prevent this from happening but perhaps it is too low. start there and work the problem.
  4. We had just this problem and it was coming from the waste disposal unit. It wrecked the dishwasher in the end and when we bought a new one hubby changed the pipework so the dishwasher discharges in the other sink outlet. We sealed the pipe outlet in the waste disposal for the dishwasher with one of those rubber wine bottle bungs you can get. Works fine now.
